Turkish Ambassador to Tehran Umit Yardim has stressed the importance of joint regional efforts to accelerate the implementation of a ceasefire in Syria.
“One or two countries cannot settle the [Syrian] issue. It needs collective determination. Therefore, regional countries, including Iran, Turkey, Egypt and other regional players should expand their cooperation to accelerate the establishment of a ceasefire in Syria,” Yardim said on Wednesday.
He noted that despite the difference of views between Iran and Turkey on certain issues including the Syrian crisis, the two countries have mutual understanding and will continue their talks to reach a common solution.
The Turkish ambassador said that his country supported the four-day truce brokered by the UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which took effect last Friday and called for the continuation of such efforts to implement a ceasefire in the crisis-hit country.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the violence.
